JOB DESCRIPTION
Our radiology needs are currently covered by a group on Guam, but we anticipate employing our own radiologist
(with back up services to cover periodically when needed) in the near future.
CHCC has a 4-bed intensive care unit, a medical and
surgical floor, CAT scan, stress testing, ultrasound capabilities, and plain films. We have a lab that does a fair number
of tests on site and sends others off. Our hemodialysis center serves about 150 individuals with modern equipment
and a capable nursing staff. We have CT, US, echo and are planning to bring in MRI as well. Outlying clinics on Tinian
and Rota, two nearby islands within the Commonwealth, are also part of our healthcare system.
We do not have any medevac services
other than those which are brought in from other locations, usually for tourists who have bought evacuation insurance.
In the event evacuation is necessary, our patients go by commercial airline on stretchers, sometimes to Guam and sometimes
to the Philippines.
Our physician population is a mix between young people just out of training getting their National Health Services
Corps loan repayment and a handful of physicians who are older. The hospital is quite poor although clean and well kept.
It is not uncommon to run out of reagent to run a certain test, have the echocardiogram machine be unusable, be out of certain
antibiotics, etc. The nurses are short-staffed and our electronic medical health system is kludgy at best.
Our patients, however, are lovely. They are appreciative, generally accepting, polite, and very
grateful. Physicians are able to pace themselves and have very reasonable schedules. If you want to make
a difference and feel like you are contributing to something bigger, this island has plenty of opportunity. One of our
physicians volunteered, “[I] enjoy working with my colleagues and hospital administration. I have never been pressured
to see more patients, bill more services, or compromise good health care in any way. From the top down everyone’s
priority is patient care.”

What is great about this job:
- Tropical island climate without seasons,
steady average temp of 84 degrees with occasional short rain showers.
- World-class snorkeling and dive spots in crystal-clear waters.
- Affordable jumping-off point for exploring Asia, Australia, and the Western Pacific
islands.
- Fascinating
WWII and Pacific Islander historical sites.
- One of the lowest tax burdens in the U.S.:
- If in the CNMI 183 days or more during the tax year (and otherwise meets requirements),
then CNMI residency status is met for that year. As a result, earnings are taxed at the maximum CNMI (“state”)
tax rate of 9% and there is a 90% rebate on U.S. federal income tax earned within the CNMI.
- If in the CNMI less than 183 days, the IRS taxes the CNMI income the same as U.S.
mainland earnings for federal income tax purposes. For state taxes, the money earned in each state is paid at
that state’s tax rate. Money earned in the CNMI has a maximum “state” tax of 9%.
- There is no sales tax in the CNMI.
What this means for residents
is that we do not file with the U.S. IRS, but only with Tax and Revenue here on island. After-tax amount retained on
a $340,000 salary here is roughly equivalent to that of a $515,000 salary in New York or San Francisco. Add to that
the fact that there is no sales tax in the CNMI!
Life outside of the hospital gets even better.
Living on Saipan is simple, but maintains some of the creature comforts that you wouldn’t otherwise get on an island
this size. Quite reasonable cost of living, great restaurants, golf, water sports, diving, and easy access to travel throughout
the world with direct flights to Guam, Korea, Japan, Hong Kong. Also, it is a great place for family. There are good early
education schools, as well as both public and private high schools that send students to top colleges and universities in
the US, Europe, and Asia. There are many WWII history sites and museums, as well as artifacts from the war that you can find
while exploring the jungle or swimming in the lagoon
